Originating in Brazil, pineapple was noticed very early by the Spaniards.
The consumption of fresh fruit from Africa developed after World War II.
It was then distributed throughout the world tropics.
It was adapted to Hawaii in 1885 as an industrial crop for the canning industry (pineapple slides with syrup).
The industrial production of pineapple worldwide is mainly based on one sole cultivar.
