A large agro-industrial
complex
USDA picture, 1994
The U.S. agriculture
is only 1.4% or the Growth Domestic Product (whereas it is 3.1% for
the E.U.) and the active farming population rate is only 2.3% of the
total active population rate (whereas it is 6.6%for E.U. and 6.1% for
France).
The active farming population rate kept decreasing these last years
but much less than in Europe or Japan. Moreover, this low farming population
rate has a diversified activity. The farming income can reach a higher
level than the external growth product only for big farms of more than
250 hectares.
On the contrary, the agro-industrial complex ( agro-industries, food-process
and distribution) represent 16% of the Growth Domestic product and 17%
of the total employment rate.
